The Short Version

I'm Maximilian Weber, founder of B-Side Games. I've spent the last decade building multiplayer games, backend infrastructure, and the teams that ship them — from solo founder to 15-person studio, from seed funding to acquisition.

I work across the full stack: game design, server architecture, blockchain integration, team leadership. I've been an external CTO, a founder, a game director, and sometimes all three at once.

I'm currently open to new opportunities — CTO roles, project leadership, consulting, or something that doesn't fit a neat job title.

Where It Started

B-Side Games began with a game made for the right reasons.

In 2014, my friend David Franco lost his brother Simon to cancer. Simon was a senior programmer at Creative Assembly — a game industry veteran. David wanted to create something in his memory, and to support Winston's Wish, a UK charity helping bereaved children.

I signed on as lead developer. Over three years, a small team of four — industry veterans and volunteers — built Three Twenty One (3:21), an independent adventure game unlike anything we'd made before.

3:21 isn't designed to challenge the player through mechanics or difficulty. Instead, it evolves through exploration and storytelling. Through small interactive vignettes — a timeline of moments — players discover what 3:21 is really about: Simon's life, told through family photos, personal details, and the people who loved him. It's as real as games get.

We released it for free on Steam and itch.io in 2017. The goal was never profit — just awareness, and maybe opening a conversation about grief and memory.

This was my first shipped game as lead developer and publisher. It's why B-Side Games exists.

What I've Built

Chainmonsters (2017–2023) — Founded and led a blockchain MMO from prototype to acquisition. Raised €100K through Kickstarter, $1.1M through NFT sale. Scaled from solo developer to 15-person team. 250,000 players, 3M+ blockchain transactions. Acquired by Spielworks GmbH in 2023.

Titans of War (2024) — External CTO for a competitive card game, working alongside Executive Producers Bo Andersson (Payday 1 & 2, Dead by Daylight) and Jens Klang. Designed and built server-authoritative multiplayer infrastructure using Microsoft Orleans and Azure. $0.045 per CCU/month at scale.

How I Work

I've been writing code since I was a teenager, working with blockchain since 2015, and shipping games professionally for over a decade. That range means I can sit in a technical architecture meeting in the morning and a game design review in the afternoon — and add value to both.

What I bring:

  • Backend architecture — Orleans, Akka.NET, Azure, PlayFab, server-authoritative design
  • Blockchain integration — Ethereum, Flow, smart contracts, NFT infrastructure, "invisible blockchain" UX
  • Game design — Economy modeling with Machinations.io, F2P systems, balancing, player journey design
  • Leadership — Scaled and managed a 15-person team, bridged technical and creative, worked with outsourced teams
  • Adaptability — Founder, CTO, game director, consultant — I fit the shape of the problem

Looking For

I'm open to:

  • CTO / Technical Director roles
  • Project / Production Lead positions
  • Consulting — game development, backend infrastructure, blockchain, AI/ML applications

Full-time, contract, or advisory — I'm flexible on structure if the work is interesting.

Creative Partner

Lysander Haupt has been my cofounder and creative collaborator across multiple projects — Art Director on Chainmonsters, TapMonsters, and PixiuTap. When a project needs the full picture — tech and art — we work as a team.
